Mid Century Modern

An iconic revival

Gently revealed down a long driveway lined with palm trees and tropical greenery is an iconic 1950s Mid-Century home showcasing deep eaves with shiplap panelling, supported by exposed structural posts and beams filled with glass and natural light.

Schwarz Design were brought into this project from the day the proud owners purchased their dream Mid-Century Modern family home that would embrace the original architecture and design.

The exterior and interior of the home were sympathetically renovated and restored, embracing the clients love of colour and entertaining, while weaving together classic mid-century furniture and accessories with timeless pieces.

Levels were seamlessly linked by smoothing transition points and adding a new floating timber staircase rising up from casual living to the elevated lounge. The Mid-Century detailing of the original volcanic stone wall which extends from the interior retaining the elevated lounge to the exterior was restored. The base of the wall was hand-scribed showcasing the natural undulating edge, creating a detailed negative between the European oak floor, embracing the craftmanship of the original build. New feature fireplace with wide width custom tongue-and-groove panelling mimicking the original exterior cladding at the front entrance. A new kitchen layout created surprizing spatial connections, with the kitchen now flowing through to the snug, with oak cabinetry wrapping around from the concealed kitchen pantry to a hidden bar, inviting exploration. Meanwhile the Tundra marble clad island and Rosso marble vanities are a robust match for the sunlight and volcanic stone.
